  • Via The Nightfly with Dave Juskow featuring exec. producer/showrunner for DreamWorks Animation Mitch Watson. Talks about it @1:19:42 in the audio clip, mentioning that it'll be serialized, released on Amazon, more like the films, and will bring back Mick Wingert as Po.

    Updates

EDIT (April 20, 2018): Cleaned up some of the thread's stacked blockquotes, in the interest of keeping it from being too long to scroll through. Just FYI if you notice your message has been edited by me.

    • I guess we'll see if they learned from the mistakes of LOA. Already very happy to hear that it'll be serialized - finally some legit storytelling rather than, "Here we go, Po screws up again and spends the rest of the episode fixing it, then everything goes back to normal like it never happened." That got really old and dry in LOA.

Some other hopes for the show:

      • More non-Po character development - Love Po, but I definitely want the franchise's other characters to get some love too. Really hoping for more on the Furious Five personally.
      • Bring in the pandas from KFP3 - Speaking of characters, I'll be pretty disappointed if we don't get to see any of the latest film's new characters.
      • Keep adding short 2D animation segments - This was the one of the very few things LOA did right, and I hope they continue that in this new show.
        Loading editor...
    • What does serialized mean?

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Means it'll have one ongoing story back-to-back with the episodes, much like a lot of larger mainstream shows rather than most cartoon shows that typically do procedural "one and done" episodes (like LOA).

Most of the time, since it is an amazon exclusive, it is only avalible to its subscribers and those subscriptions are not free, i was hoping for it to be on netflix as well as i do have a netflix account to watch anything. on there.

    • Well, this is certainly interesting. It will be nice to see a more serious take on franchise as an animated series. LoA was fun and made some interesting additions to the lore, but it definitely had its problems. I almost hope it'll bring in some of the elements of LoA-like Fenghuang-but give them the interpretation they really deserve.

        Loading editor...
    • Aw man. No news on Kung Fu Panda 4. It is just unfortunate the new kung fu panda series will not be released on television like Legends of Awesomeness.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Why "unfortunate"? It's just being released on a different viewing format, that's all. And it makes sense - lots more people nowadays watch Internet streams over traditional TV broadcast, hence why lots of other entertainment franchises are doing the same thing in creating a web series (or at least providing their content online in some form).

Might also be a good sign that this series will be handled with much more care than LOA. I personally feel like most TV shows nowadays have the bar set pretty low, unless they're on premium channels like HBO. LOA had to present itself in front of a default, Nickelodeon-themed target audience, but a web series might attract a different audience. I'd like to see how that goes for the first few episodes.

        Loading editor...
    • They might release it on netflix, hopefully.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ If DreamWorks has already made deals to release on Amazon, then I highly doubt it'll ever show up on Netflix. Especially with the recent news of Netflix wanting to push for more of their own original content (50% by the end of 2018). In fact, I bet it might be licensed out for original programming, thereby making it unavailable anywhere else.

        Loading editor...
    • Question is, would they be likely to ever release it on DVD?

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Lol, is this just a brainstorming session of how to legally watch the series on anything else but Amazon? :P

I wouldn't count on it, or at least (for the sake of being a little bit hopeful) anytime soon after the series releases. The physical media audience is also dissipating - not as much as TV, but still noticeably. Plus both Netflix and Amazon very rarely release their originals on DVD/Blu-ray unless they're vastly popular, like Netflix's Orange Is the New Black. I don't think a Kung Fu Panda series will ever be THAT popular, unfortunately.

Best odds are a very weak "maybe", but keep in mind that the ones for LOA never did all release. It'll still depend on its popularity - probably not gonna happen if there's no public demand for it.

    • Spottedstar said: ^ Lol, is this just a brainstorming session of how to legally watch the series on anything else but Amazon? :P

Well, at this point we know so little about it that there's not much else to discuss. :D

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Hopes and predictions are always good discussion topics. You and I have already kinda touched on that. Seems to me a much more interesting and stimulating of a conversation than, "Eh, I wish it was on _______ instead..."

        Loading editor...
    • Fair enough. I'm definitely hopeful that this series will be in keeping with the character development present in the films; LoA always had this weird mixture of the Furious Five and Shifu's original attitudes towards Po mixed with what they felt towards the end of the first film. It'll also be nice if any character development that takes place in the series remains in place-I get that true change can take time, but too many LoA episodes pretty much only referred to previous ones by saying "oh yeah we fought that one time."

        Loading editor...
    • You and me both.

        Loading editor...
    • Don't you think it would be more sutible to create a seperate thread for hopes and predictions for the series and save this one for general news and disscussions going towards the series so we are not going back and forth between predictions and news, it would really be a mess having to switch back from one topic type to another.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ The entire KFP News board is for that purpose. Doesn't hurt in the meantime to discuss what we'd like to see.

Guess it's a bit misleading from my original post when I said that I'll be updating this thread w/ more news, but honestly I was assuming more news about the show would be released relatively soon, but it obviously hasn't yet. So I'll remove that.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ yeah your probably right, since the series is supposedly in its early stages, we won't get much information untill the series progresses along production. I think that if we do have new information concerning the series, any new news or updates then we can but the word update(in bold or caps or both) to indicate any new information concerning the series when creating a new post, and when a plot or snyposis is released, then we can create a page or something and update that page as more information comes out. Besides, i don't even think that we got an official announcement about the series.

        Loading editor...
    • Yeah, haven't seen it anywhere but here-even the Wikipedia crowd doesn't seem to have caught on to it.

        Loading editor...
    • ^^well don't want to get too off topic here, but i had first heard it announced on tumblr and even included the link to the podcast that mentioned it, so no it did not first pop up on here that i know of.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ I merely said that this was the first place I personally had seen it. I don't think it even shows up in the news search for Google, or didn't last time I checked.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ I noticed that about the news search, too.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Oh sorry, the only other thing i found was a video on youtube but, it contains the same information that was already in the tumblr post.

        Loading editor...
    • Do you think someone might put the episodes on YouTube for the people that do not have and cannot pay for Amazon? I`m just wondering.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Only if YouTube can legally license it, but because it seems like this is an exclusive project w/ Amazon, I doubt it. And if anyone tries to upload the episodes anyway, they'll be flagged for copyright.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Yeah, that was my first thought.

        Loading editor...
    • It sounds awesome :). I wish I was still allowed to watch Kung Fu Panda...

        Loading editor...
    • Well, I hope this show will be an oppertunity to bring back some of LOA's villain roster. My hoped top three is

1: Fu Xi: Because he was awesome and it sucks that due to LOA being done, that he's kinda a one timer. Fu Xi has the greatest potaintional for world building for snakes and their place in china and perhaps more onto their relation to dragons.

2: Pang Bing: The Cat souceress has an interesting backstory that LOA only touched on abit and should be given a chance to be explored more.

3: Ke-Pa: Because come on, can we really assume that Ke Pa really died out? There's still so much we BARELY know about Ke-Pa.

Now, I wouldn't mind if others like Junjie and Taotie are given returns as well, because they were the most commen in LOA and ergo wouldn't be surprising if they showed up once more, heck, maybe they won't use the LOA characters and focus more onto an entirely new baddy since we're talking about a more focused series.

        Loading editor...
    • I'm afraid I disagree with you entirely.

LoA sucked, Simply put it. Any believable characterization or emotion was few and far between, the characters are out of character, and the magical crap. Just, seriously, have they no shame?

It's been made clear that any magic/supernatural, apart from what is shown in the canonverse-AKA the movies and related shorts-is unacceptable and has no place in the KFP universe. At least in KFP 3, there appears to be a limit on the supernatural. LoA, on the other hand, doesn't know where to stop and much of it is not even close to supernatural elements of real Chinese folklore.

If we get even a single character or aspect of LoA in this new series, then that makes LoA canon. And for LoA to be canon just throws the franchise's life away.

So, nothing LoA must permeate this show.

      Don't mess this up, Dreamworks.

Don't say we didn't warn you.

        Loading editor...
    • To Firecat19

Now, I respect that I may not be able to speak for everyone, but I personally believe that LOA has more potaintional then some would've believed had it been exicuted just right.

Again, the Series may deside to do it's own thing, but I'm just personally saying that I would've liked it if they went that way, it would've made the KFP media more interwined and connected, and there's nothing greater then a series that's connected to all of it's lore in a harmonious continuity chain.

Also, while LOA isn't exactly accreate to chinese lore, KFP as a whole isn't exactly accreate to Chinese Fauna as a whole, given that the first movie gave us a Galopigose Torttose, the 3rd a dang grizzly bear, and alot of KFP media seem to show Gorillas for some reason. So your desire to complain about LOA's accreatey seems, ironic.

        Loading editor...
    • Well, at least out-of-place animals can actually happen in real life.

Oogway immigrated to China from the Galápagos Islands a thousand years ago. It's been stated.

Brown bears have natural habitats in Anerica, Europe, and Asia.

And the gorillas could've just immigrated to China, just like Oogway did.

        Loading editor...
    • Fair points, though I never figured Brown Bears are in asia. They seem like a north amarican/europian animal in my perspective, but you learn something new every day.

Still, I have my own prospects and you clearly have yours. Let's agree to disagree.

    • Update: A user on the KFP subreddit pointed out here that there's been a trademark application for "Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny", which according to the page is classified under categories like "television series" and "webisodes", which means this is very likely the title of the new series.

We'll still need to wait and see via an official announcement if it's true or not, but just a little something to keep everyone on their toes.

        Loading editor...
    • From the title, it does sound like it leans more torwords it's own thing. But I'm still hoping for LOA villain returns, cause like last comment, some of them still have some potaintional.

        Loading editor...
    • Well, the title is promising. I just hope that they'll give this the kind of treatment we've seen in the shorts, rather than the fairly trite performance we got from Legends of Awesomeness. Don't get me wrong that show had it's moments and concepts, but it was rather underwhelming compared to Secrets of the Masters or the Scroll.

To be honest, it is better for the series not to be connected to Loa, but for it to be it's own thing or at least connect to the movies in some way since it is supposed to be "More serialized" and "More in tone with the movies". Hopefully, we don't have to worry about the characters we know and love go really "off-on character" like we had to deal with in Loa. As I had said before, Loa was under Nickeloden which do not treat their shows well, It did not treat the Legend of Korra well and at some point, during it's second season, pulled off the air and moved it to only web only episodes. The only one that is treated well is 'Spongbob" and a few others that i cannot think of. I have not been keeping track, but last time i remember, their new lineup of shows have decreased in quality than i can remember since i had watch nick shows as a kid. Hopefully, this series is treated well in terms of better animation and better and coherent plot compared to that of Loa as well as the characters kept the same or close to their movie counterparts.

    • ^ Keep in mind that I am only asking for the return of LOA's villains, espeically ones that barely were given a chance to shine, like Fu-Xi, Pang Bing, and Ke-Pa. I am not asking for the show's flaws to return as well. I am just saying that a new show would mean new oppertunites for under-utilised villains, espeically with LOA's premature fate as only having three seasons.

    • Update: Latest headlines confirm "Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny" as the title of the new series, as well as a short summary!

When four panda kids stumble upon a mystical cave beneath Panda Village, accidentally absorbing the chi of ancient and powerful kung fu warriors known as the Four Constellations, they must realize a destiny to save the world from an evil force. Meanwhile, Po finds himself faced with his biggest challenge yet — teaching this ragtag band of kids how to wield their newfound powers.

No solid release date yet, but the articles are all saying "late 2018", so perhaps for a fall schedule?

Already had one of my wishes come true: PANDAS! :D Really curious about these characters and the "Four Constellations", as well as the "evil force". It also says it takes places in the panda village, which is awesome; I hope that doesn't mean, though, that Shifu and the Furious Five, being in the Valley of Peace, aren't going to be featured in this series.

Anyway, expectations are high - hoping for the best.

        Loading editor...
    • Alas, as expected, this does sound like a series doing it's own thing, mainly following a what happened after the 3rd movie.

Still hope for LOA villain returns though, but so far it does feel like the show aims to be it's own beast.

        Loading editor...
    • Gonna guess we've got the old "ancient heroes banished a great evil from the world (temporarily), and now the unlikely heirs to their roles and powers must defeat the returning evil (permanently)" scenario going her.

    • Is there any information about the animation used in this series? I need to ask because with all this series using flash animation. I just want this KFP series to use CGI.

        Loading editor...
    • We will see how this goes, I have a feeling that this series will be pretty short for a web original. Although it tends to happen at times, but shorter shows are better than a 50+ episode long dragout right. Anyway, like others have said, i have a feeling that the five wont make an appearnce on here or wont play a major role in the series, but i hope it is not cheesy like LOA was, and later 2018, did not expect that, and i kind of think that's a bit early to release a series after it was only announced basically a year ago, but will see, they may be releasing it on a week-by-week bases, or if they pull a netflix special. will tend to release 1 full season at a time. I cant wait until more information is spilled out concerning the plot. I'm a little skepitcal about the series, but at the same time exited to see where the serie will lead.

No, nothing on animation yet - not even images. Good question, though. I just hope they can make it as good of quality as the shorts (2D or CGI, either one). I got an eyesore staring at the Nickelodeon quality during LoA. XD

I was thinking, All Hail King Julien uses a really good CGI for being a series (I think it's actually better than the CGI used in the first Madagascar movie) and since the executive producers have worked on CGI series, it's very likely they are using CGI for Paws of Destiny. Anyway, I'm just glad they are making something about KFP. The franchise needs something new.

    • I wish the Four Constellations don't just get all the role, we need to see the Furious Five as well. And I am Pretty sure it won't be like LOA. LOA has a different universe of itself and movies and francise have nothing to do with it. I am certain about this. Because LOA sucked.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ All joking aside, I'm sure the Furious Five and Shifu will appear in the series, but I doubt it will be to the same extent as LoA; the series looks to be focusing mainly on Po and these new Panda characters. It is your prerogative as a fan to decide whether to accept LoA as part of the series canon or not; it's the type of material where you can do that.

Like maybe a tyrannosaurus rex villain voiced by Richard Epcar.

    • ^ A T-Rex villain is abit too much for a streach for a show based on ANICHENT CHINA?!

        Loading editor...
    • ^ WWE Superstars tend to be really annoying actors, in my experience; probably comes from their stage personalities which are/were more ego than anything else. Technically speaking, a T-Rex villain would not be outside the realm of possibility, given that their fossilized remains have been found in China. Of course, there would probably have to be some kind of mystical explanation for how such a character would be still alive/possibly undead, unless they want to throw in some kind of KFP equivalent to Marvel's Savage Land or Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World. Of course, it does seem highly unlikely.

        Loading editor...
    • ^ Well that's what I am trying to say. Now, I do agree with the fozzel findings, but apart from that, A T-Rex appearing in Anichent China, even with what you said in mind and what you brought up, it's still abit much. Even LOA avoided going too far with streahed dispense of disabelief.

Never heard of him personally, so I'll probably spend some time later checking out some of his past work. According to the article, he composed music for the YouTube Red series Cobra Kai - also never heard of it, but it seems to be a spin-off of the Karate Kid movies. Since it shares a martial arts topic with KFP, listening to stuff from it might be the best comparison sample to get an idea of what may come in the new show.
