  • Another of my brainstormed ideas.

A lot of wikis seem to have some kind of application process for their users to request being wiki staff. Though we're not in great need of staff right now, I think having one could be useful for the future. It gives each user a fair opportunity to show their eligibility for doing special tasks around this wiki, which I think a lot of Wikia users appreciate. Plus, we'll definitely need the extra help once we do become more active, and it'll be easier to have a line of applicants ready than just "analyzing" everyone (which is kind of why I've been doing so far).

Obviously there will need to be a specific list of qualifications for each category: admin, rollback, and chatmod. In the past, all I've done is look at how active the user is, how they edit, and how they get along with other users (both on- and off-wiki). We could use similar information for making qualifications in each category, and maybe add more if needed.

    Thoughts? Ideas?... Yea? Nay? Meh?

    • I think we have enough people for when it's busy, and just observing users works fine; but you're the one who makes these decisions. If you want to do it this way, I do think that's a pretty good list of qualities.

    • ^ Thanks for your feedback; I really appreciate it. :) I actually wish it wasn't always me making the decisions. Sure, I've technically been here longer, but I don't think that should automatically grant me "executive power". Part of the reason I'm throwing a ton of these ideas out is so I can get more community input and involvement, especially from staff. Generally I believe team-based decisions are much more beneficial than individual-based ones, and I think the same could be true for wiki communities. So I hope you and Zaralith feel comfortable enough to voice your opinions, thoughts, and ideas without hesitance. :)

    • I think we leave it to you because we're confident you know what you're doing. You just seem more knowledgable and on top of things. You're pretty much the Oogway of the wiki, Spottedstar. lol

But I understand you want more help/ feedback. For me, I'm just not strongly for or against these ideas, because I think things work fine as they are. Maybe making them into community votes would be more helpful?

Haha, Oogway huh? Thanks for the compliment! :) I can't say I'm confident in everything I do here, but I suppose I agree with you that I do know a little more about its processes. Honestly, though, it's a lot of work! :P So I guess these ideas are part of my own process in (1) making the work load a little lighter by automating tasks and getting people more involved, and (2) boosting up the wiki's activity and notoriety.

I don't think these ideas are 100% perfect as they are, and I'm really interested in seeing what other people think about them so they can be used to their fullest potential in accomplishing the above goals.

Also, I guess lately I've been looking towards the future--both mine and the wiki. If this wiki is so dependent on just one person, and then that person left or vanished, what state would the wiki be in? (By the way, don't worry; I'm not going anywhere. The wiki has become my child in a way: I feel like I need to protectively look after it. ;) ) How will the wiki have its content expand consistently, or settle editing disputes, or share and develop ideas, or do any other wiki community task without confusion?

I'm hoping these ideas will help to get the wiki to become more automated and organized so it isn't entirely dependent on the leadership of one person. Wikis with lots of active editors have done the same with their own ideas, and I think we should follow in their foosteps.

For me, I'm just not strongly for or against these ideas, because I think things work fine as they are. Maybe making them into community votes would be more helpful?

Community voting has also been part of my process in getting stuff more organized. I think those should be saved for solid ideas, like the simple ones of activating/deactivating features or deleting an article. For complicated ideas like these, it would probably be best to put it first in the Suggestions board. That way they can develop a little more, and also get people involved in that development process.
