Hi, KFP fans! :) I'd like to take a brief moment to inform you all about a new feature Wikia has recently released in Wikia Labs called Maps.
What is it?
Maps is simply a special wiki feature with its own namespace (like "Thread:" or "File:", etc.) that allows the community to create and edit an image into an interactive map! This is accomplished by "pinning" information onto an image: from characters and locations, to items and events and more! I'm not sure if there will be a list of default categories to choose from, but we can also create our categories own with its own map symbol (which I'll be more than happy to design, if needed).
Though I haven't tried all of the features out myself yet, I've looked at them through Wikia's videos and examples and it seems to be in good shape for us to use here. If we do happen to run into a bug, however, we'll be able to help Wikia out with the feature by reporting bugs to them. :)
The reason I posted about this was not just to let everyone know about it, but also to create a thread that everyone can share and talk about their ideas for this feature. There's a lot of stuff we could map for the KFP franchise: locations, important characters, objects of significant value, movie posters, etc. The categories for the maps are also endless in possibilities. Just from the few I listed above, we'll be able to get our maps filled up with tons of info!
Also, FYI: I haven't enabled the Maps feature on this wiki yet. I would like us to form a good list of ideas first before we jump into it.
To get the ideas rolling, here's how we can do this...
In a post, include the following:
An image that you think would make a good map. It doesn't have to be in full size now, though we should try and get a full-sized one in the future if we want to use it. Feel free to also give it a title if you want, though we can work out all of those details later if we need to.
A list of map categories (with one or two examples each). This will especially be useful in deciding what kind of icons we should have with our maps. I'll be able to determine which ones are popular, and then get started on making them.
From there, we can use the Forum's "Karma" feature to determine which ones the community likes. I don't think we should have a limit (yet) on how many maps we'll use for the Maps feature; as long as there's a good image with a good list of categories, then we should definitely use it.
Feel free to leave any questions about the Maps feature here in this thread. Let's get started! :D
Sounds like a good idea. I've seen "maps" where there's an image and different places on the maps would lead to different links, but based on what I saw, this looks interesting. Here's just a list of possible maps, with possible categories:
- Map of Valley of Peace (KFP1 & LOA)
- Map of Gongmen City (KFP2 & something)
- Map of Chorh Gom Prison (KFP1 & LOA)
- Map of Jade Palace (all of above)
- Map of Noodle Shop (all of above)
Good map ideas! Some of those came to my mind too while I was brainstorming.
However, I think you might have misunderstood the categories. Just labeling something as "KFP1" will only serve to link to the movie article. There needs to be categories that can be use to pin multiple topics onto a map. Let me explain:
There will be default primary categories called "Parent Categories" (like character, location, item, etc.), and then there will be secondary categories under those called "Pin Categories" (like "Weapons" under the parent category "Items", etc.), which will be the most customizable one.
So for example, if we mapped out the Hall of Warriors:
Then under each of those secondary bulletpoints, we would place a pin on the map that will indicate that pin as a "Weapon", a "Battle", etc.
We can look into it more once we've enabled the feature, but it might help to make a bulletlist like that to help with the map categories.
Another note: If there isn't any specific classification of a pin category under a parent category available for a picture, then using the same name is also acceptable.
For example, the Training Hall:
Because there weren't any particular battles, ceremonies, or celebrations that occurred in the Training Hall, I just used the same name of the parent category as the pin category name. This will indicate that there are still some other "miscellaneous" events worth noting, like Po's first time through the mechanisms.
^Yep, I think you've got it covered.
There's still more we can do, but yeah, I think we've at least got the main ones covered.
I wonder what it'll be like to work with this map editor thing...
I learned how the map categorizing works by toying a little bit with an example map on the Maps Wiki. You can have a look at it yourself to see how the tool works. It's pretty easy and straightforward.
Well, I don't know if it's any good, but I made an attempt at a character icon...
That's really good actually! That was pretty much what I had in mind for the character icon too. I think it just needs a little bit of cleaning up, particularly the transparent space. When I opened the image up in Photoshop and added it to a dark background, I found small traces of color surrounding the head. Even though the image will be slightly smaller on a map, those marks may still show up.
So if you could, try to fix that up, and then make sure the rest of the image is solid (the lines, the colors, etc).
I have lots of ideas about what we could do for the rest of the icons. I'll probably brainstorm on this thread while I work on making them. And you're more than welcome to help too, Vapor. :)
For wikis map I think you should add the bamboo forest where tigress and the others go through when they are on a mission and the pool of sacred tears where po was being taught kung fu by master shifu.
Update: I've officially enabled the feature on this wiki, and I've already started a map. Feel free to add to it, as well as add new maps of what we've listed here in this thread.
Since this is a new feature, obviously it still needs work. I've already noticed some flaws with the mapping (like moving pins, renaming maps, changing map pictures, etc), which I'm sure Wikia is already aware of and is currently working on updating. So don't feel stuck if you happen to run into one of these flaws.
Other than that, the feature should be good to go. If there are any questions on the feature, post them here and we'll see if they can be fixed.
Awesome, nice work! :) I have something similar, but I like yours better.
I've been wondering what to do with the icon colors. Obviously the panda icon doesn't need anything more than black and white, but palaces are typically colorful. However, I think we should remain consistent with colors, i.e. have just two or three of the same colors on each icon. In that case, I might change up some of the colors on the icon to match the panda icon colors.
Maybe. I'm not really that sure - that's why I'm bringing it up. I think it would look nice to have all the icons match somehow, like the Star Wars map icons: they all use the same colors and trace style. Or, if it doesn't matter that much, then all the icons can use different colors, in which case the palace will need more colors.
