Bao and Mei Mei performing

Bao and Mei Mei are both auditioning for a talent show. Mei Mei is doing her usual ribbon dancing, but the two judges, Grandma Panda and Hom-Lee don't appear to be impressed. When Bao plays his instrument for his audition, he instantly steals the show, and the judges love it. Unfortunately, he does it during Mei Mei's performance and this leads to them both aggressively competing for attention. Eventually, Mei Mei's ribbon catches on fire and it causes her to accidentally set off a box of fireworks. This sends both Mei Mei and Bao flying in the air. In the end, Mei lands back on stage, catches Bao, and the whole audience cheers for them.

In Kung Fu Panda 3[]

Bao is one of several pandas that Po meets when he and his father along with Mr. Ping travel to the hidden panda hideout. Upon meeting Po and Mr. Ping, Bao commented on their apparent differences in looks and lifestyle to the pandas of his village. He later enlisted under Po's instruction in learning kung fu, with Po helping him to utilize his proficient kicking skills from playing Ti Jianzi.

Here, Bao protects his friends and Master Po with his chi, which acts as a shell for when the Four Constellations are under attack

Bao is the twin brother of Nu Hai and grandson of Grandma Panda. Both Bao and Nu Hai parents had been gone for an unspecified time, that is why Grandma Panda is the one who takes care of them.

Bao, Nu Hai, Fan Tong, and Jing found the temple of four constellations and receive their chi when Bao decided to touch the Black Tortoise statue in the temple. Afterwards, he begs with his friends to Po in hopes that he'll teach them Kung Fu. When ambushed by Jade Tusk and her entourage- Bao and the other Four Constellations helped Po defeat them which finally convinced him to mentor them.

In "Blue Dragon Plays with Fire" when Po goes around trying to wake up the four pandas, Bao is seen to be lazily sleeping in, even sleeping through Po banging a pan and a spoon together. Eventually, he wakes up- not before accidently hitting Po in his face. Later, when Po shows the children their new Kung Fu dojo, he along with Jing and Fan Tong are less than thrilled about the poor state it's in. Po then sits the panda children down to tell them more about their hero Chi and the Four Constellations. He tells Bao about Black Tortoise and his unwavering selflessness. Ironically, Bao gloats about being the "best at being selfless." The panda children then get into an argument about who got what hero Chi, which then Po explains that it's impossible to trade their Chi powers with each other.

Some time later Bao and the other panda children lead Po to a newly cleaned and renovated dojo. Po then attempts to give them basic training in Kung Fu. The panda children aren't terrible but don't excel either. Po congrats them on a good first week. Later as Nu Hai, Bao, Jing, and Fan Tong leave school, Nu Hai makes a statement that suggests that she is their leader because she inherited Blue Dragon's Chi- and he was leader of his own Four Constellations. The rest of the panda children aren't sold on her being the leader- especially Bao. Suddenly a goose-messenger named Ping rushes into Panda Village with an urgent message for Dragon Master Po: bandits have overtaken Wu-Ran Village and the local constable requests his help. Nu Hai immediately rushes forward and asserts herself and her friends as the Dragon Master's students- making sure to mention that she is the leader. She says that they will deliver the message to Po for him. Nu Hai mentions that since they weren't able to get their hero Chi to activate in the dojo, perhaps the high stakes of the bandit ambush might forcefully activate it for them. Bao asks Nu Hai if she remembers what Po said about "taking deep breaths," and not "getting ahead of yourself," Nu Hai brushes him off and strokes his ego a bit to get him to agree with her. They decide to save the town without enlisting Po's help.

The Four Constellations arrive at Wu-Ran Village to see a bunch of huge and aggressive Yak bandits terrorizing Pika villagers. Nu Hai tries to assert herself and yells at them to stop. Due to the panda children's small size and young age, the Yaks simply laugh at them. After Jing exacerbates the situation by throwing rocks at them, the Yak bandits slowly close in on them. Nu Hai hopes that the heat of battle will bring on their Chi, but nothing happens. Nu Hai admits that she might have gotten ahead of herself, and struggles to come up with a new plan. She starts to panic. Suddenly, she has a mystical vision of a blue dragon leading her to an alleyway. She quickly leads her friends into the alley and they narrowly avoid the Yak's attacks. Unfortunately, the Yak Bandit Leader intercepts their path and physically restrains Jing and Bao. Nu Hai and Fan Tong try to fight him but he knocks them down with ease. Seeing her friends and brother in distress quickly causes Nu Hai to panic, however, she remembers Po's earlier advice to "just take a breath. Focus." Nu Hai takes a big breath in and calms herself down. Suddenly she gains the clarity she needs to activate her Blue Dragon hero's Chi which allows her to take out the Yak Bandit Leader with a super-powered Chi punch- saving her friends. Po arrives at the scene and takes out the remaining Yak bandits before expressing his disappointment with the four panda's rash actions.

Personality[]

Bao is shown to be very energetic, playful, mischievous, and hyperactive. He can also be rather curious and outspoken, asking Po why he ate with chopsticks instead of his paws, and questioning Mr. Ping's goose features as opposed to that of a panda's. He is also very good at continuously keeping toys in midair by bouncing them off his feet, similar to kicking a soccer ball.

Canon

In Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny, he is described as the following:

Unlike his sister, he has a mischievous streak and likes to play practical jokes and stir up trouble. It seems each panda kid is imbued with the ancient chi he or she needs, and this is certainly true for Bao; he absorbs the chi of the Black Tortoise, which gives him empathy and helps him learn to put others before himself.[1]

[Bao] is a trouble maker who's rough around the edges. He can be a bit arrogant and entitled but has a good heart. Unlike his sister, Bao has coasted through life on his charm and charisma. He likes to mess with his friends - particularly Fan Tong. Bao does occasionally have moments where he realizes he and Nu Hai need each other, and though Bao likes razzing his friends, he always has their back.[2]

Bao tends to come off as rather overconfident and self-absorbed. He has a dream to one day become famous and makes himself out to be quite the charmer- although most who come across him find him more annoying than endearing. Despite this, he always tries to put his best foot forward and usually has good intentions. Especially when it comes to saving the world.

Fighting style[]

During the invasion of the Panda village in Kung Fu Panda 3, Bao kicks some fire crackers at Jombies.

Like the other Four Constellations, Bao can harness the chi of Black Tortoise to perform special abilities. He has used his chi to expel a large energy blast capable of knocking back enemies and objects alike.

With the chi of the Black Tortoise, Bao is able to create a chi-based shield themed after a tortoise shell.

Relationships[]

Po[]

Bao: What kind of panda doesn't know how to roll?
Po: Well, I'm kinda new at this 'being-a-panda' thing.
—, Kung Fu Panda 3

At first, Bao was a little confused at some of Po's mannerisms and why he couldn't do things that seemed normal for pandas, such as rolling or eating with his hands instead of chopsticks. Despite this, the two seem to get along, as Po was shown playing with Bao and his friends and later training him how to fight.

Fan Tong[]

Bao and Fan Tong have a pretty tight friendship throughout the first season of the show. However, when Empress Xiao appears to have feelings towards Fan Tong, he becomes jealous of him and isn't afraid to show it (though Fan Tong insists that they are still friends). However, when the evil Shi Long began her plan to overthrow Empress Xiao, it is Bao who convinces Fan Tong, that he needs to tell the empress not to give her throne to her evil adopted sister, and their friendship is amended.

Nu Hai[]

As his twin sister, Nu Hai and Bao love each other as much as they get on each other's nerves. Bao finds Nu Hai to be rather stuck up and bossy, often going out of his way to deliberately disobey her orders as the leader of the Four constellations. Despite this, Bao has shown to be at her side when it really matters- and is always ready to help her out.

Clothing[]

In Kung Fu Panda 3, Bao wears a brown vest with carpet-like tufts. He also wears a green belt, gray pants, and a small red hat with gold trim.

In The Paws of Destiny, older Bao wears a mossy green vest with the same carpet-like tufts as trim. He also wears bright red pants with thin white embellishments and a thick white belt. Both of his wrists are wrapped in bandages and he also wears a thin bandana across his forehead.
